The right disposal of waste is one of the major problems being faced not just by India but by all nations across the globe. Waste disposal poses problems in terms of land use, revenue and environmental costs. Improper disposal of waste creates unhygienic conditions – environmental pollution; and outbreaks of vector-borne diseases.

In simple terms, waste management can be described as efficient management of waste in an end-to-end process-oriented manner to minimise its impact on mankind and environment. The process could include recycling to produce some useful goods, generate gas/electricity and the like.

Vision

Healthy, scientific, self-reliant waste management system in all the participant villages for better living.

Mission

Mitigating unscientific collection and disposal of wastes in 200 partnering villages by instituting waste management system in a collaborative and self reliant manner by December 2020

Our Strategy
In achieving the vision we are:

» Equipping each and every partnering village with waste collection and removal tricycle rickshaws.
» Campaigning to carryout the ‘segregation of wastes at source’.
» Establishing Village Level Vermicompost Units in mitigating the organic wastes collected from the entire village.
» Encouraging farmers / individuals in establishing Individual Vermicompost Units.
» Involving Grama Vikasa Samithi (GVS); Panchayat and community in monitoring the effective implementation of programme.
» Conducting awareness and motivational programmes to multifold the people participation.
» Tapping resources from community; Panchayat; philanthropic personalities and like minded organizations to make the initiative self sustainable
» Tracking the movement of rickshaws and household delight index in assessing the effectiveness of the entire programme
» Collaborating with like minded organizations to buildup network in the exchange of information / material

Translating vision to reality :

Recycling waste into useful organic manure was carried out on a pilot scale by setting up individual vermiculture units.

The positive feedback enabled us to construct 47 Village Level Vermicompost Units and 142 Individual Units with the help of the community between 2015-2018. The Organisation contributed earthworms for each of the units.

Collection and management of waste:

» Equipping rickshaws based on the number of households (new rickshaw with two compartments that has the facility to collect organic and recyclable wastes separately)
» Segregation of wastes at source
» Collection of segregated wastes from households
» Identifying demarcated dumping area (provision for dumping wastes separately)
» Establishment of one Village Level Vermicompost Unit per village
» Introducing PPP model to achieve self reliance.
